God, Please Save These Troubled States

The world of zombie films is about to get a whole lot better: Max Brooks' World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War is being produced by Brad Pitt's Plan B Entertainment. There's no director or actors attached yet, but one of the most original zombie stories will soon be on the big screen!

I don't read much modern fiction, but my ongoing obsession with zombies drew me to this book, and boy, did I love it. The story is an "oral history" from the survivors of a zombie apocalypse; told from many points of view in a non-linear fashion, it's a fascinating "re-imagining" of history. The fun part about the novel is that it makes for a challenging and rewarding re-read; I didn't notice it that much the first time around, but many of the characters have intertwining stories that loop past each other.



In this adaptation, writers and directors have the chance to not only re-invent the zombie genre, but make an internationally acclaimed film. Since the book is from so many different viewpoints and from so many different countries, it's possible to utilize a ridiculous international cast; much like the show Lost, characters could appear in each others stories, making for a challenging film to watch.

Here's to hoping this isn't botched. This is the film to look forward to for 2009!
